Or even better, just subscribe to my DC Russian Events Calendar, and I’ll let you know when something related to Russia is coming up! If you’re in DC, keep an eye on Politics and Prose for future interesting events. I, for one, look forward to reading ‘Former People’, as well as the three other books he’s written. Sounds like an entertaining way to work your way through some serious Russian history. The book follows events surrounding two noble families:the Shermetevs and the Golitsyns. Smith says by the end of the book, you feel like you get to know them. Did people deserve to be imprisoned, or even killed simply because they were born into a certain social status? Maybe the division of wealth wasn’t (isn’t) fair, but like Smith said, any time a an entire class of people are sought out and killed, that’s wrong. In his remarks Smith noted he’s gotten some curious comments and looks from both Russians and Americans for writing about what many consider to be an unpopular subject: What it was like for ‘the other side’ (the losing side) following the Revolution. Focusing his narrative on three generations of two dynasties, Smith traces the fall of the upper class from its pre-1917 wealth and privilege to the punishing treatment-ranging from impoverishment to execution-meted out to class enemies. Smith, a historian and former State Department USSR analyst, draws his title from the Soviet term for the Russian nobility. What are the structures of racism today?Ī few weeks ago I went to Politics and Prose to hear Doug Smith talk about his new book: ‘Former People’. White supremacy developed as a tool for justifying African slavery and preventing poor whites from joining slave rebellions and insurrections. We should also note that in each case, racism was a necessary component of the underlying economic order. We know that the old structures–slavery and later Jim Crow segregation–have been overthrown. We recognize this in American history more than we do about our own time. The reason is that racism is not just about individual racists with bad ideas. So it’s not enough to just rely on birth rates or death rates to end racism. The problem is that conversation took place 10 years ago. In a previous Associated Press (AP) survey conducted last year, 52 percent of people exhibited what AP defined as explicit anti-Latino prejudices.”Ī young man once told me he thought we just had to wait for all of the old racists to die, and then racism would be over. As Socialist Worker reported, “A recent poll that found 51 percent of people in the U.S. Not only do the corridors of power remain dominated by white men, but the ideas of racism remain highly influential. Newsroom managers at big television networks are 88 percent white men. Some 78 percent of board seats for Fortune 500 companies are occupied by whites, as are 82 percent for non-profit organizations. Roughly 82 percent of Congress and 96 percent of the Senate is white. "This includes (for example) posting Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, or anti-LGBTQ+ content to promote or incite violence or hatred using symbols of hate movements to intimidate or harass others and the glorification of mass murderers. The “white establishment” might be a minority at the polls, but they hold an overwhelming majority of the seats of power, where the diversity of the U.S. The site said that after the new rules come into effect: "If we determine a post or blog is promoting hatred, glorifying violence, or is engaging in the unwanted sexualisation of another person, it will be taken down. The new guidelines also cover others forms of potential harassment. Tumblr explained its approach to deepfakes and creepshots by adding "a simple statement" to its harassment rules: "Don't engage in the unwanted sexualisation or sexual harassment of others."
