When I have time and I'm feeling brave I'll go try to hunt down those 3rd party app. This is a good enough fix for me, for now. that's overworking the CPU is suppressed. Apparently it only runs critical library files in safe mode so whatever 3rd party app. The symptoms still occur in OS X, but when I boot in safe mode, they go away completely. *Update(1/28): I finished a scan running bootcamp and on OS X. I'm going to try some other suggestions and report back. *Update(1/24): I've tried to run a full scan with Sophos a couple of times now and it always freezes towards the end of a scan. I took a screenshot of the activity monitor and you can see what I'm taking about: I left Sophos running a full scan over night and it's still running this morning! (getting close to being done) It has found several types of malware including Genieo, which is apparently well known for being a pain in the ass to get rid of. I've spent so much time on this with very little progress so any help would be greatly appreciated! I have tried updating the it and 10.8.5 is the highest it will go (maybe there's a way to force it higher?). There are important files and some expensive software that I no longer have the license info for to reinstall them.Īnyways, I've decided to try to remove the virus/malware, but I've searched around for a while now and I can't find ANY anti virus/malware software that will work with this old of an operating system. The original idea was to just wipe the whole drive and start fresh, but it has turned out to be more effort than I first thought. I have a lot of experience with Windows computers but very little with OS X. It also has Bootcamp which runs Windows fine (no virus effects). I'm trying to fix my laptop with a virus that causes the processor to constantly run hot (operating system process takes up 70%+ even just sitting at the desktop not running anything), which makes everything unbearably slow.
